Text Hearts vs. Heart Emoji

Heart symbols come in two flavors. Text hearts such as ♥, ♡ and ❥ are ordinary Unicode characters, so they follow the color and size of the surrounding font — a ♡ in an Instagram bio looks clean and minimal and matches the rest of your text. Heart emoji like ❤️, 💜 and 🩷 are drawn in full color by your phone or computer, and the exact artwork differs slightly between Apple, Google, Samsung and Windows.

Some characters sit in between: ❤ (U+2764) can appear either as a plain black heart or as the red emoji, depending on the app. If you specifically want the colorful version, copy ❤️ from the emoji group, which includes an invisible selector that asks for emoji presentation.

How to Type a Heart Symbol

On iPhone and Android, the quickest route is the emoji keyboard — search “heart” to see every color. On Windows, hold Alt and press 3 on the numeric keypad for ♥ in most desktop apps, or press Win + . (period) to open the emoji and symbol panel. On a Mac, press Control + Command + Space to open the Character Viewer and search “heart.” In HTML, ♥ renders ♥. Or skip all of that and copy one from the grid above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ♥ and ♡?

♥ is the Black Heart Suit (U+2665), a filled heart, and ♡ is the White Heart Suit (U+2661), an outline. Both come from playing-card symbols and work as plain text almost everywhere, including Instagram, TikTok, Discord and Word documents.

Why does my heart show up as a box?

A box (□) means the font on that device doesn’t include the character. Common hearts like ♥, ♡ and ❤️ are supported nearly everywhere, but rare lookalikes such as ꨄ or 🎔 and the newest heart emoji like 🩷 or 🩵 may not display on older phones.

How do I make a heart with my keyboard?

The classic keyboard heart is <3 — a less-than sign followed by the number 3 — and </3 is a broken heart. Many apps automatically turn <3 into a heart emoji. For a real heart character, use Alt + 3 on a Windows numeric keypad or copy one from this page.

Can I use heart symbols in my Instagram or TikTok profile?

Yes. Heart symbols are standard Unicode text, so they can go in a bio, caption or comment. Platforms often restrict special characters in the @username itself, but display names and bios generally accept them.
