What is the Lenny face?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) — the Lenny face — first appeared on the Finnish image board Ylilauta in 2012 and spread through Reddit, 4chan and Twitch chat until it became the internet’s go-to face for a suggestive or mischievous tone. It is built entirely from ordinary Unicode characters: parentheses, degree signs, combining accent marks and the IPA letter ʖ, which is why it can be pasted anywhere plain text works.
Tap any face above to copy it, then paste it into Discord, WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram comments, Reddit, Twitch or a document. Because it is text rather than an image, it also works in usernames and bios.
Shrug, table flip and the look of disapproval
The shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ borrows the Japanese katakana ツ (tsu) for its smile, the table flip (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ comes from Japanese kaomoji culture and uses box-drawing characters for the table, and the look of disapproval ಠ_ಠ is made from the Kannada letter ṭha. Each has dozens of variations here — angry, cute, cool or sleepy.
One gotcha: in apps that use Markdown, like Discord, Reddit and Slack, the backslash in the shrug is treated as an escape character and the left arm disappears. Type it with two backslashes, ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯, and it shows up correctly.
How to type text faces faster
There is no keyboard shortcut for the Lenny face, but you can create one. On iPhone, go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement and add the face as the phrase with a shortcut like “lenny”. On Android, Gboard’s Dictionary → Personal dictionary works the same way, and on Mac use System Settings → Keyboard → Text Replacements.
On Windows, pin your favorite faces in the clipboard history (Win + V) or simply keep this page bookmarked and tap to copy.
