How to Type ©, ® and ™

On Windows, hold Alt and type on the numeric keypad: Alt + 0169 for ©, Alt + 0174 for ® and Alt + 0153 for ™. On a Mac, press Option + G for ©, Option + R for ® and Option + 2 for ™. Microsoft Word also autocorrects (c), (r) and (tm) into the symbols by default. In HTML, use ©, ® and ™. On phones these aren’t on the standard keyboard, so copying from this page is the quickest option.

What Each Symbol Means

© marks a copyright notice, as in “© PuffChip Studio.” ℗ is the sound recording copyright symbol printed on albums and audio releases. ™ is used with a trademark that isn’t necessarily registered, while ® signals a registered trademark, and ℠ is the service mark — the services equivalent of ™. The section sign § and the pilcrow ¶ are common in legal and editorial writing: § points to a numbered section of a law or contract, and ¶ marks a paragraph.

This page covers typography, not law — if you’re deciding how to protect a name or a creative work, check the rules in your country or talk to a professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ™ and ®?

™ can generally be used with any name or logo you claim as a trademark, while ® is reserved for trademarks that are officially registered — in the US, using ® on an unregistered mark can cause legal problems. This is general information, not legal advice.

Do I need the © symbol to be protected by copyright?

In most countries, no. Under the Berne Convention, copyright protection applies automatically when a work is created, without any notice. Many people still add a © notice because it clearly shows ownership and the year of publication.

How do I type the copyright symbol on a Mac?

Press Option + G to type ©. Option + R types ® and Option + 2 types ™.

What is the Alt code for the copyright symbol?

Alt + 0169 types © on Windows. Hold Alt, type 0169 on the numeric keypad and release Alt. For ® use Alt + 0174, and for ™ use Alt + 0153.
