Choosing the Right Arrow

Basic arrows like → and ← (U+2190–U+2199) are the safest choice for documents, slides and code comments because almost every font supports them. Double arrows such as ⇒ and ⇔ are used in math and logic to mean “implies” and “if and only if.” Heavy and decorative arrows from the Dingbats block — ➜, ➤, ➔ — are great for bullet points, call-to-action lines and social captions where you want a bit more weight.

Curved arrows (↩ ↪ ↻) suggest replies, undo or refresh, and small triangles like ▶ and ▸ work well as list markers or “play” buttons.

How to Type Arrows on Windows and Mac

On Windows, several arrows have classic Alt codes that work in many desktop apps when you use the numeric keypad: Alt + 26 for →, Alt + 27 for ←, Alt + 24 for ↑ and Alt + 25 for ↓. On a Mac, open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search “arrow.” In HTML, use →, ←, ↑, ↓ or ⇒ for ⇒. If you type arrows often on a phone, a text replacement shortcut (for example “->” → “→”) saves time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Alt code for the right arrow?

Alt + 26 types → in many Windows apps — hold Alt and press 2 then 6 on the numeric keypad, not the number row. Alt + 27 gives ←, Alt + 24 gives ↑, Alt + 25 gives ↓ and Alt + 29 gives ↔.

What does ⇒ mean?

⇒ (Rightwards Double Arrow) is commonly used in math and logic to mean “implies.” In casual writing, people also use it like a regular arrow to point to a result or next step.

Why do some arrows look different on my phone?

Characters like ➡ and ↩ have both a plain-text form and an emoji form. Depending on the app, they may appear as simple black arrows or as colorful emoji buttons. Copy from the “Arrow Emoji” group if you specifically want the emoji look.
