How flipping text works

There’s no “upside down” setting in Unicode, so the generator swaps each letter for a character that already looks like its rotated version — ɐ for a, ǝ for e, ʇ for t — and then reverses the order so the line reads correctly when the screen is turned 180°.

Mirror mode simply reverses the order of the letters without flipping them, and the combined style flips each letter while keeping the original order.

Fun ways to use upside down text

Flipped text is a classic prank for group chats and comments, a playful “greetings from Australia” joke, an eye-catching line in a TikTok or Instagram bio, or a quirky gaming name.

Because it’s plain text, upside down writing can be pasted anywhere — iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Discord, YouTube comments and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I type upside down on my phone?

Phone keyboards can’t do it on their own. Type your text here, tap the Upside Down result to copy it, and paste it into any app.

Why do some letters look the same after flipping?

Letters like o, s, x, z, H, N and O already look identical when rotated 180°, so they are left as they are. Every other letter is swapped for its closest upside-down lookalike.

What’s the difference between upside down, mirror and backwards text?

Upside down rotates each letter and reverses the order. Mirror (backwards) text keeps the letters as they are but writes them right to left. The combined style flips the letters while keeping the original order, so the line looks reflected top to bottom.
